| “God has glorified His Son. How deeply we ought to regret that we glorify Christ so little, bought with His precious blood, owing all we have to Him. We make but a very poor return, and even when we are helped by the Spirit of God to glorify Christ, yet I am sure we should always feel an insatiable desire to do it yet more. To glorify Christ is so sweet a thing, that when a man has once tasted of it, he pants and pants within his spirit for a greater capacity to glorify Christ, and this is one of his griefs, that he cannot praise his Savior as he would.” Charles Spurgeon 02/04/1869 This week as we continue our series on, “Not the Jesus we want”, we will look at Jesus being glorified by God. In the book of Isaiah, it talks about God glorifying Jesus, and the theme continues in the Gospel of John and in Paul’s letters to the Corinthians and to the Romans and by the writer of Hebrews. All these “books” or letters talk about Jesus being glorified by God. John 17:1-5 After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. It’s interesting that Jesus’ cross is connected with what is called Jesus’ “glorification.” That’s just not how we normally think in our society that is so focused on pride and self-elevation and self-glory. We have difficulty seeing that the way of humiliation (the cross) is the way of glorification. But Jesus again brings both humility and glory together as he speaks of his own death in submission to God’s will. What does this mean for us? Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
