This week we find ourselves back in the book of Proverbs.  We are looking at things that can eat away at us.  So far, we have looked at pride and laziness.  This week we are going to see what Proverbs have to say about envy.

Proverbs 14:30                  New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

30 A tranquil mind gives life to the flesh, but jealousy makes the bones rot.

How much time do we spend desiring what others have?  Do you wish you had another person’s skills or possessions?  Do you wish for someone else’s social status?  Do you refuse to celebrate another person’s success?  Are you unhappy when others around you have success?  Do you find joy when other people experience setbacks or failure?  Do you frequently scrutinize or judge what other people are doing?  Do you constantly downplay or diminish the success of others?  Do you become upset when people compliment others’ hard work?  Do you offer fake compliments when talking about other people?  Do you spread rumors or false information about other people?  Are you overly competitive with others?

What if we traded our envy for contentment?

This Sunday let’s talk about why Proverbs warn us against envy.  Let’s talk about what contentment is and what it is not.

What is our motivation in life?

Contentment trusts God for the “stuff” of life.  Envy seems to be driven by a need to have more than others.

What is your source of joy and happiness?

Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
