This Sunday we continue our series on Jesus’ Emotions.  In English anxiety can be described as a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease about an event.  In the three scriptures below are some bolded words.  I am using anxiety as an umbrella word to cover the different feelings and intensities that Jesus experienced.  As you read allow yourself to come alongside Jesus in each situation he finds himself.

John 11:28-37

When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, ‘The Teacher is here and is calling for you.’ And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?

Q.  What emotions do you experience when the death of a loved one occurs?

Luke 12:49-53

‘I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:
father against son
   and son against father,
mother against daughter
   and daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
   and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

Q.  What is it like to be striving towards a goal and but roadblocks keep getting in your way?

Mark 14:32-34

They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated.  And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’

Q.  On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being low anxiety, 10 being high anxiety) what number would you give Jesus’ emotion in this setting?
