There is a lot going on at Marion this week. We are in the midst of VBS this week and it is a good time. If you aren’t here each evening, you should come and hang out with us. Don’t forget, this Thursday evening we will be hanging out enjoying a bounce house, a dunk tank, and Antietam Dairy will be serving ice cream. Everyone is invited and bring your friends and neighbors, and we can hang out and enjoy the beginning of summer.
This Sunday we will be worshipping VBS style. We will be continuing our series on Jesus’ sermon on the plain. I invite you to read from the beginning of Jesus’ sermon… Luke 6:17-42.
Our focus this week will be Luke 6:36-42…
36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”
39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above the teacher, but every disciple who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye but do not notice the log in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.
What stands out to you in this passage?
What is the relationship between mercy and judgement?
Where are you most tempted to judge — yourself, others, or both?
How does remembering God’s mercy toward you change the way you respond to others?
What is the lesson for us in the parable that Jesus told?
Who might you need to forgive or show mercy to this week?
Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
