As we continue our series on the Spiritual Practices, this week we will be looking at the practice of Simplicity.

What do you think of when you hear the word simplicity?

In Richard Foster’s book, The Celebration of Discipline, he talks about how inward simplicity which in turn leads to outward simplicity.  Foster was so passionate about simplicity, he wrote another book, titled, Freedom of Simplicity.

In our time together on Sunday, most of our focus will be on the inward practices of simplicity.  I am using Mathew chapter six as I think about inward practices of simplicity.

Matthew 6:19-24                                            New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Foster provides ten ways to practice outward simplicity.  Can you guess what they are.  I have given you the verb for each invitation.

1.            Buy

2.            Reject

3.            Develop

4.            Refuse

5.            Learn

6.            Develop

7.            Look

8.            Obey

9.            Reject

10.         Shun

Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
