This week we are beginning a new series where we will be looking at some of the “One Another” statements in the New Testament.
If I counted correctly there are 59 one another statements in the New Testament. Most of these one another statements are encouraging, healthy, positive actions, but there are three negative one another statements.
Do you know what they are?
Fifteen of the one another statements are about loving one another, more than any other one another statement.
Why do you think that is?
This week as we look at this statement of love one another, I figured the place to start would be the words of Jesus…
John 13:34-35 Common English Bible
34 “I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. 35 This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other.”
I encourage you to read the entire chapter of John 13 to get some context.
A few things stand out to me as I sit with these two verses.
What stands out to you?
Was loving others really a “new commandment” ?
What about the second part of Jesus’ statement… “Just as I have loved you…”
Is that what makes it a “new” commandment?
Does that change the way we think about how we are to love others?
Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
