This week, I would like to start with a question.  A riddle of sorts… What do the following people have in common…

Richard Nixon

Lance Armstrong

Bill Cosby

John Wilkes Booth

O. J. Simpson

King Saul

Any guesses?

I’ll wait…

These guys all experienced a “fall from grace” moment.  As you look back at the list, you can easily recall their “oops” moment.

This week as we look at King Saul, Israel’s first king, he got off to a good start but that didn’t last long.  As we look at the leadership of King Saul (1 Samuel 9 – 31), we see such a promising start to King Saul’s reign as Israel’s first king, but through a series of poor choices including disobedience, pride, arrogance, rebellion, and jealousy by chapter 15, Samuel stops relating to Saul and “the Lord regretted making Saul king over Israel” (1 Samuel 15:35).

Israel wanted a king like the other nations.

They were reminded that God desired to be their king.

They insisted on an earthly king, like the other nations.

They got King Saul…

King Saul was full of so much hope, so much excitement, but was a lousy king.

Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
