As we continue looking at statements that are not in the Bible, this Sunday we will look at the statement… Follow your heart…

My initial thoughts about this statement are to have someone read Proverbs 28:26 and not say anything more.  I really like the Amplified Bible translation…

He who trusts confidently in his own heart is a [dull, thickheaded] fool, But he who walks in [skillful and godly] wisdom will be rescued.

Would that be okay to let King Solomon speak to us this Sunday?

Even though Solomon says it quite bluntly, we still have the tendency to lean into our own desires and understandings.  Speaking of blunt, Jesus says some blunt things to those who were thinking about following him.

Luke 9:57-62               Common English Bible

57 As Jesus and his disciples traveled along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Human One has no place to lay his head.”

59 Then Jesus said to someone else, “Follow me.”

He replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and spread the news of God’s kingdom.”

61 Someone else said to Jesus, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say good-bye to those in my house.”

62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand on the plow and looks back is fit for God’s kingdom.”

Are you surprised by Jesus’ words to these three people?

How do you think you would have responded to Jesus’ invitation to follow him.  Would we drop everything and follow immediately, or would we have some questions?

When you decided to follow Jesus, was it an immediate decision tied to emotions, or did you have questions and take time to consider the decision and talk with others?

This Sunday let’s take a look at the context of these three interactions with Jesus and the meaning of Jesus’ responses.

How does this passage in Luke tie in to this “follow your heart” attitude?

Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
