Does God Care?

Life is full of so many kinds of experiences. Some bring joy, some sorrow. Some are triumphant, some tragic. Some are understandable, some incomprehensible. The question I ask today is this… Does God care?

We are more prone, of course, to ask this question when something we experience makes no sense to us, or we are crushed or burdened emotionally by life. But even when life is going well, and even in the midst of happiness, we sometimes wonder, does God care? Can God really keep track of all that goes on in the world? Does God notice everything that happens? Does God control everything that happens?

While my understanding of God doesn’t allow me to see God at some cosmic control panel, controlling the outcome of each and every situation we get ourselves into or are affected by, I do believe that God sees all and is able to redeem even the most tragic happenings in our lives and carry us through those that seem unbearable.

I am convinced that no event in our lives or in the world escapes his notice, and no event can alienate us from God’s care. The words of a song that I heard recently spoke deeply to me at a point of sorrow, and spoke to that assurance I have but have difficulty putting into words and can easily lose sight of in the midst of difficulties. I share them with you for your consideration.

Nothing Is Lost On the Breath of God

Nothing is lost on the breath of God
Nothing is lost forever
God's breath is love and that love will remain
Holding the world forever
No feather too light no hair too fine
No flower too brief in its glory
No drop in the ocean no dust in the air
But is counted and told in God's story

Nothing is lost to the eyes of God
Nothing is lost forever
God sees with love and that love will remain
Holding the world forever
No journey too far no distance too great
No valley of darkness too blinding
No creature too humble no child too small
For God to be seeking and finding

Nothing is lost to the heart of God
Nothing is lost forever
God's heart is love and that love will remain
Holding the world forever
No impulse of love no office of care
No moment of life in its fullness
No beginning too late no ending too soon
But is gathered and known in its goodness

The God who created each of us and gave us breath loves us deeply. So deeply, in fact, that we are never forsaken no matter the circumstance, and no experience is wasted, even when we are unable in our finite minds to understand or to see God’s hand or to feel his presence.

We are known, known deeply, by the God who made us. Even the inner parts of ourselves we are unable to share with others. Even the parts we ourselves may not be aware of or able to understand. Be assured of that today, whatever your circumstance or experience, and rest in the assurance that God does care!
